Team rider Andrew ‘Cotty’ Cotton takes on the Xtratuf 3 Lakes Challenge

Team rider Andrew ‘Cotty’ Cotton is best know for surfing the worlds biggest waves, but during Spring he set himself a new goal, the Xtratuf 3 Lakes Challenge.

Here’s what Cotty had to say:

Hi. I’m Andrew Cotton. When I’m not surfing some of the worlds toughest waves, I’m always seeking my next adventure. During this spring I’m attempting to take on the xtratuf challenge of swimming in the uk’s three most highest lakes.

• Red Tarn in The Lake District of England

• Loch Etchachan in the Cairngorms of Scotland and

• Llyn Llyffant in Wales’ Snowdonia national park.

"What makes this extra tough is that we’ll be driving from North Devon in an all electric vehicle a total of 1’300 miles, walking over 40miles and climbing in some treacherous conditions. Temperatures are likely to be freezing and the weather will undoubtably be unpredictable. I’m going to attempt to do all of this across three back-to-back gruelling days, fighting fatigue and the cold."

The reserve covers 19 miles of world class surf zones and coastline. Stretching from Saunton, around the point to Croyde, then to Putsborough, Woolacombe and Lynmouth. Being the first and only cold water WSR, with most of the best waves being in the winter.

The core focus - “Looking after the quality of the waves themselves and
preserving the ecosystems that produce them. Surf spots need to be celebrated, recognised, and protected”. – Adam Hall

The aim - “The aim is to protect waves and the surfing experience from
threats such as harmful coastal development, water quality and pollution,
limited coastal access, climate change, and a host of the other factors that
impact the delicate ecosystems on which waves of quality depend.”
