Sister Sessions at The Wave

A Celebration of Women's Surfing and Community 🏄‍♀️

On Sunday 6th October, The Wave in Bristol hosted another edition of the popular "Sister Sessions" — a series of women-only surf events designed to create an inclusive and supportive atmosphere for female surfers. These sessions are part of an inspiring initiative to bring more women into the surf world, which traditionally has been male-dominated. By offering women the chance to experience the thrill of surfing in a safe, friendly, and judgment-free environment, Sister Sessions are helping to break down barriers and grow a more diverse surf community.

Surfing has long been celebrated for its physical and mental health benefits, from improving cardiovascular fitness to boosting mental clarity and reducing stress. But often, the competitive and sometimes intimidating nature of crowded lineups can be off-putting for women, particularly beginners. These sessions flip that script entirely. There’s no unsolicited advice or pressure to perform, with women supporting one another both in and out of the water.

Having attended several Sister Sessions myself, I can honestly say that these days have provided some of the best surfs I’ve ever had at The Wave. The vibe is incredibly welcoming, and you can feel the community spirit as soon as you get in the water. Every wave is met with cheers, and when you paddle back out to the lineup, there’s always someone offering words of encouragement. The energy is infectious, and it’s amazing to see friendships forming throughout the session, often carrying on into the café afterwards for a post-surf coffee.

For this session, we at Tiki Surf provided free board rentals. Jess, Rosie, and I showcased our new Evolution Surfboards and Custom Surfboard collection, and we were thrilled by the enthusiasm and interest from the other surfers. Many women came up to chat with us about trying out boards that were smaller and had less volume than what they were used to surfing. It was so rewarding to see how confident and open they were to challenging themselves — a testament to the supportive environment of the Sister Sessions.

Despite the weather taking a turn and heavy rain setting in for the afternoon, the mood wasn’t dampened. The female DJs from Red Bull kept the energy up, and there were yoga sessions by Move Your Frame for surfers to warm up or cool down before and after their surf. Live music from Anna Stanton added to the lively atmosphere, making it feel like a true celebration of women in surfing.

For my surf, I managed to get out on the Tiki Totem 9'3 longboard — one of our Custom Surfboards. It was a super fun session! The board paddled into waves effortlessly and felt incredibly stable, making it easy to cross-step on the face of the wave. It was one of those surfs where everything just clicked, and I came out of the water with a huge smile on my face.

Overall, the Sister Sessions at The Wave continue to prove how powerful a supportive and inclusive community can be in bringing out the best in each surfer. Whether you’re a seasoned pro or just starting out, these sessions are an incredible way to experience the pure joy of surfing alongside an inspiring group of women. I can’t wait for the next one!
