Tiki Outer Atolls Boat trip Feb 06.

Diary:

Day 4

Gazeera lefts. Shoulder high with a strong current down the reef. The longboarders are loving it. So sunny, so hot. Great warm up waves to start the trip. Onto the island in the evening, fruitbats, fresh coconuts and sunset. Good first day.

Day 5

Motored round to a perfect righthander. Joel gets a chance to show us what he’s got! It’s only around the head high mark but his surfing is ridiculous; all power and carves and hacks and airs, tearing the wave apart. We do our best to imitate but it’s clear who tops the pecking order in the line-up. Always the gentleman he calls more people into waves, than he takes himself.

That afternoon a pod of 300 spinner dolphins pass through the channel by the boat; Nuts! But not as nuts as Sophie who grabs a board and paddles into the thick of it. She’s about a mile off into the Indian ocean before the dinghy reaches her!
Poker is the name of the game that evening and bedtime is well into next morning.

Day 6

Working on the theory of ‘the more hungover you are the better the surf is’, we wake up heavy headed but optimistic. But it’s not to be; 2ft rights and about 1ft deep.
Nevermind, snorkeling instead. Not a bad compensation with sea turtles, manta rays and reef sharks to check out.
