You have to admire his dedication sitting on the back of a jetski in howling winds and rain with the ever present threat of a clean up set.

Still, his efforts have paid off as this film shows. This is a highlight reel of the best action from the last couple of winters. These 3 minutes document the ground breaking sessions that have changed the face of UK surfing over the last 2 years. Presented in a stark, dark and genuine edit.

Our man on the ground Barry Mottershead gets a couple of nice waves – the turn that won him “Best Turn” in the Mullaghmore Tow Comp (at 02.15) and the dredging, ledging barrel that got an XXL nomination (at 03.30-ish).

It’s the taking part that counts or something along those lines. It’s what people say when you’ve just lost a race or a competition and you need a bit of moral support or similar. Although I was beyond stoked about my achievement and attention I received from just getting nominated I never really thought in my wildest dreams I’d actually win the category ‘Biggest Wave’ in the XXL awards 2012 but that wasn’t going to stop me making the trek over the pond to LA and having a damn good time at the awards ceremony and enjoying every minute of it, which is exactly what I did.

On the bright side even though I didn’t win, I did get to claim an ‘assist’ for the Biggest Wave winner 2012 and for a new world record of 78ft which went to Garret McNamara on a wave I towed him into on the 1st November 2011 and he very kindly split his winnings.

I’m stoked that last winter was such a great year for me and the support and warmth that Tiki gave me which made it all the more possible but now I’m just looking forward and concentrating on next winter, and hopefully getting some more big waves.

Tiki team rider Andrew Cotton will be there; nominated in the Biggest Wave Award category for a monstrous wave in Ireland.

Video footage shot from the land and David Olsthoorn’s epic water shot on the a cover of Wavelength mag made the 50ft hollow beast one of the most published of 2012.

We can now release the unpublished shots of the wave – the angle that really shows the thickness, size and power of the wave and the 30ft wall of spray that blew Cotty off the board.

Who said Towing-in is easy? Note the 4ft wave in the foreground rebounding off the reef.

Setting a line. Mullaghmore is a technical wave that drains and bends along the slab reef – this is where waves are made or not.

Got some bloody great empty waves at levy this avo – just me and jack johns in for ages. Got some more stuff too but will send through later, and there was a proper photographer taking shots from slightly behind the peak which i reckon will be a loads better angle – will find out who he was.

Absolutely loving that suit you sent. Surfed non stop through winter because i didn’t have to worry about the cold. So good!
